Book Summary: According to the author, the causes of anti-semitism are two-fold: 1) Christian philosophy is at its essence anti-jewish and antisemitic. Anti-semitism springs from the writings of Paul and the writers of the Gospels. These invented works canonize anti-jewish sentiments such as the diecide of Jesus by the Jews. The seeds of anti-Semitism were sown by the antagonism of early Christian leaders toward Jews and the Jewish religion. A famous example is John “Chrysostom” (Golden-Mouth), Archbishop of Constantinople (ca. ), whose stirring sermons moved many listeners.

Expelled from Alexandria in A.D. , he moved to the area of Caesarea, capital of the Roman province of Palestine, where he would die.
‘POSSIBLY,’ WROTE THE THEOLOGIAN, Rosemary Ruether, ‘anti-Judaism is too deeply embedded in the foundations of Christianity to be rooted out entirely without destroying the whole structure.’ It is partly because its implications are so terrifying that we have sometimes been reluctant to face up to the history of anti-semitism.
