A new class of high-entropy transparent ceramics (rare-earth-alkaline-earth metal fluoride) in the form of CeNdCaSrBaF 12 shows significant potential for a range of new functionalities, including use as a laser ceramic with unique chemistry and optical properties that are considerably different from those found in conventional fluoride. Laser machining has been shown to offer an increasingly attractive alternative to net shape forming processes and/or diamond grinding for producing components of advanced ceramic and ceramic composite materials.

~The Tailoring Multiphase Ceramics Conference emphasized the disussion and O~ analysis of the properties of multiphase ceramic materials in which the C.l microstructure is deliberately tailored for specific applications or properties. In the traditional ceramics sector, the multiphase nature is a consequence of the use of raw materials of relatively low purity; more recently it has become a feature of the engineering ceramics sector as the deliberate construction of multiphase structures or composites has been attempted in the quest for enhanced or novel properties.

The current trends are (1) nano- scale ceramics, (2) multiphase composite ceramics, and (3) tailoring and design of ce- ramic materials. 1. Introduction. α-SiAlON (α′, solid solution based on α-Si 3 N 4, M x Si 12−(m+n) Al m+n O n N 16−n) is a promising engineering ceramic material because it absorbs the metal cations used as densification aid and thus provides a ceramic with lesser grain boundary phase 1, 2, strengthening of α′ is possible by in situ compositing with β-SiAlON (β′, solid solution based on.

Biomimetic design and processing of laminated B 4 C-Al cermets, based on knowledge gained from the microstructure-property characterization of abalone shells, is described. In the nacre section of the shell, the microstructure is highly organized as CaCO 3 (aragonite) crystals, with a thickness of μm, separated by a layer of organic matter – Å thick.
