A new class of high-entropy transparent ceramics (rare-earth-alkaline-earth metal fluoride) in the form of CeNdCaSrBaF 12 shows significant potential for a range of new functionalities, including use as a laser ceramic with unique chemistry and optical properties that are considerably different from those found in conventional fluoride. Laser machining has been shown to offer an increasingly attractive alternative to net shape forming processes and/or diamond grinding for producing components of advanced ceramic and ceramic composite materials.
